You're probably experiencing one of these problems with your mixer shower.

Mixer showers are a very popular type of shower, and can be found in both hotels and homes across the UK.

These showers are highly reliable and some manufacturers offer 5-year warranties on new models (compared to the standard 1-2 year warranty for electric showers).

Mixers are able to mix hot and cold water sources and provide water at the desired temperature. The shower’s cartridge regulates temperature and can be either thermostatic or manual. They can be mounted on combination boilers (which take water from both hot and cold tank), gravity-fed systems (where they are taken from both hot and cold tank), or on pumps (which also take water from cold tanks).

Mixer showers have the following common problems:

Intermittently running cold and hot. This is most common with combination boilers. This problem can be caused by a blocked or damaged shower head, blocked or kinked inlet filters, or a blocked or leaking shower hose. You could also have a problem with the non-return valves.

Permanently running hot or cold. A blocked inlet filter or a faulty non return valve can cause the shower to run hot or cold despite all your efforts to regulate the temperature. If none of these solutions work, you will need a new thermostatic cart. This is the heart of a mixer-style shower. Although this will most likely fix the problem, it is possible that the cost of a replacement cartridge could exceed the price of a new shower. It is worth considering.

When the shower is turned off, water can drip from the showerhead. This is a common complaint we get about mixer showers. This is a common complaint we receive about mixer showers.

Reduced water flow rate. This problem is similar to unwelcome temperature changes during a shower. It can also be caused if the shower head is blocked, the shower hose is damaged or kinked, or inlet filters that are blocked within the shower. Blocked filters on a pump could also be the problem if they are installed. This prevents the pump from pumping water up to the shower and defeats its purpose.

These solutions can be used to address the above-mentioned problems:

Blocked shower heads. Blocked shower heads can be caused by limescale buildup or debris inside the showerhead. This prevents water from flowing properly through the head. Use a descaler to clean the showerhead or replace it.

Shower hoses that are damaged or kinked. Shower hoses that have been damaged or are kinked will need to replaced.

Blocked inlet filter. They can be easily removed from the shower (please refer to your manual) and cleaned gently before being reinserted. If this fails, you will need to purchase new inlet filters.

Non-return valves that are not working properly. Faulty non-return valves must be replaced as damaged valves can cause severe damage to your shower.

Faulty seals/flow cartridge/temperature cartridge To correct any faulty editions of the shower, you will need both temperature and flow cartridges.

When replacing an item, ensure that all instructions are followed by the manufacturer.
